Willem van de Velde
Willem van de Velde(Dutch, 1633 - 1707)

Willem van de Velde the Younger brought the golden age of Dutch marine art to its peak, earning a reputation as the supreme portraitist of the open sea. Learning the fundamentals from his father, he formalized his training to master oil painting. Rather than sticking to basic technical diagrams, he learned to infuse maritime scenes with immense atmosphere, light, and poetic space.

His canvases navigated two worlds, shifting between mirror-like calms and storm-tossed gales. He possessed a legendary, near-photographic precision, rendering every rope, sail, and hull with such structural accuracy that his works serve as valuable historical references for seventeenth-century shipbuilding.

After changing economic conditions pushed him to relocate to England, King Charles II granted him a studio. His dramatic naval spectacles revolutionized British maritime art, deeply inspiring future masters like J.M.W. Turner.
